Retreat House_ Pianist

Project 2B: Retreat House

Retreat House is a continuous project from pavilion to create a retreat at Kuala Selangor Nature Park. A retreat denotes withdraw to a quiet and private place in which one can rest and relax and meditate for a short period of time. This retreat is function as habitable architectural spaces to enable the activity associated with living, dining, cooking, storage and such within the built up space. The relationship between the design and its context is essential in making the retreat unique to its landscape and activity.

A Pianist's retreat at Kuala Selangor Nature Park. This retreat house is designed for a pinist who loves nature and always get inspiration from natural elements. The retreat house is built on the river. The design of the house is based on the concepts translated from characteristics of the user - pianist.

Characteristics of the pianist: Impulsiveness, curiosity and high achiever.

Concept 1: Random Rhythm (impulsiveness) - The behaviour of pianist is not easy to predict and will change at anytime. Therefore, the spaces are arranged in random pattern, in the mean time will having interaction with defferent environment of the site.

Concept 2: Radial Plan (curiosity) - The plan spreads out from a point to express the curiosity of pianist to have deep and wide range exploration in music.

Concept 3: Hierarchy (high achiever) - Spaces are strategically placed by height to call attention to itself as being the most important element in the composition in order to show different levels of achievement by pianist.

Learning Outcome

Through this project, I have learned to interpret and analyse simple site context and analyse client’s character and needs in relation to the design of a small building. I have also learned to design a simple building type that meets user requirements and respect site context that balances both internal and external design values. I will improve what is lacking for my design and learn through mistakes and experience in the future design.
