La Maison Tropicale by Jean Prouve

Project 1: Famous People, Familiar Faces_ Diagrammatic Abstraction

This project allows us to investigate and to explore how spaces are created from the making of architectural elements: architectonics.-solid, planes, lines and frames and the idea of using pure and diagrammatic models to express the architectural idea.

A group of us were required to do research and analysis on architectural work of Modern Master. I have learned from Jean Prouve and his works in Modernism period when mass production was brought into this world. Jean Prouve, a furniture designer who had designed three prototypes of prefabricated tropical house by using aluminium for French colony in Western Africa. The house is called La Maison Tropicale. These houses was ignored and boycott by the west African because there was the time nationalism had raised in that region.

Regardless of that, it was a successful project. It was recognised by Western countries because of its modern design and innovation in technology and industrial character.

Learning Outcome

I have learned to identify master architects and their works and understood the basic architectural compositions of solids, planes, lines and frames of La Maison Tropicale by Jean Prouve. I have also learned to ‘diagram’ and analyse architectural work of selected architect. This project is a good exercise for us to learn more about design development in architecture.
