Journey for the Five Senses

     Project 1

This project required us to explore issues of spatial typologies and poetics through simple design. We have chosen to propose 2 schemes for a ‘walk’ themed ‘journey for the 5 senses’ of memorial for tragedy MH 17 and Korean MV Sewol Ferry disaster. By using two contrasting spatial types of our choice, the walk should translate a poetry spatial experience, and it should be informed by precedents studies.

Precedent studies presentation board

Studies of USS Arizona Memorial for tragedy during World War 2

Memorial presentation board

Memorial designed for Korean MV Sewol disaster

Learning Outcome

In this project, I have managed to identify and explain different spatial types in architecture, and how they inform spatial use and experience. Besides, I have also able to identify and analyse case studies to inform the design project. I have learned to create tectonic languages of different spatial typologies which imapact on the uses and experiential conditions of space. Lastly, I am able to generate design through conscious consideration of section-plan relationship with considerations of human scale, natural light, materiality and textures. By the way, I still need improvement in designing poetry spaces related to the incident and its context.
